12-year-old Student Emerges Cowbell National Mathematics Champion


A 12-year-old Senior Secondary School II student of Ota Total Academy, Ota, Ogun State, Master Sanni Abdulmusawwir has emerged as the 2007 National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC) overall best student for the senior category. At the second and the final stage of the examination took place on Saturday March 31, 2007 in Lagos he scored a total of 95 per cent (46 in the objectives and 49 in theory) to accomplish the feat.

Little Master Abdulmusawwir was declared the competition’s champion at a prize-giving ceremony that held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Abuja on Wednesday May 9, 2007. He went home with a cash prize of N130,000, a plaque medal, certificate along with a bag containing lots of Cowbell gifts. His school, Ota Total Academy, was also rewarded with 200 plastic chairs and tables. Speaking at the Prize Giving ceremony, Mr. Adekunle Ajala, the Human Resource Director, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, disclosed that over sixteen thousand students in 128 locations across the country sat for this year’s competition (the 9th edition), on Saturday, February 10, 2007.

Master Abdulmusawwir alongside Chidubem Ezeaka, the second place winner in the senior category also represented Nigeria in the just concluded Pan Africa Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) held in Abuja recently.

National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC) is a yearly competition sponsored by Promasidor Nigeria Ltd., makers of Cowbell Milk, Cowbell Chocolate Food drink, Miksi Milk, Drink-O-Pop, Loya milk, Top Tea and Onga Food Seasonings. The competition is Promasidor’s corporate social responsibility aimed at changing the perception of Nigerian students that mathematics is a very difficult subject. The first edition was conducted only in Lagos State in 1998. It gradually expanded in scope becoming a national affair in 2001, covering the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
