Ogun to Upgrade College to ND/HND Awarding Institution

Determined to re-position the Ogun State Cooperative College, Ijeja, Abeokuta, government has began move to upgrade its status to a National and Higher National awarding Institution. Just as it paid N2m affiliation fees of the state owned Cooperative College and the Social Development Institute, Shasha, Iperu Remo, owed the Olabisi Onabanjo University resulting from the default of the immediate past administration.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives, Mrs. Yemi Olanrewaju who disclosed this in a statement by the Spokesman of the Ministry, Mr. Ayokunle Ewuoso, said her ministry which supervises the College would soon forward a proposal to the office of the governor concerning the proposed upgrading of the institution for approval.

She said “About a month ago, that is in December we sent the assistant registrar of the college to Kaduna and get information as regards the requirement for the upgrading of the school which he did and he brought in all the documents. Right now we are working on the nifty gritty of the documents, so that by the time we pass it on to Mr. Governor we would have done our own end of the requirement and then be able to advise the government appropriately”.

Shedding light on the recent payment of N2m affiliation fees owed Olabisi Onabanjo University by the present administration; Mrs. Olanrewaju said the refusal on the part of the immediate past administration to upset the bill has led to having students of Social Development Institute (SDI) and Ogun State Cooperative College not graduating in the last seven years. She said the money had accumulated over the period of four years during the tenure of the last administration noting that the gesture by the government was a pointer to the fact that it is committed to ensuring academic excellence in all the state owned institutions which the college was not an exception.
